Abstract:The lyric writer XIE Yu-cen from the South of Yangtze River was good at calligraphy and painting, especially at composing poems according to a given tune. He was adept at writing of seal characters and Li style of calligraphy. His calligraphy of inscriptions on bronze objects was considered better than WU Chang-shuo. His paintings were characterized by indulgent technique, weak ink and simplicity. He was praised by ZHANG Da-qian as “first one in China”. He left to the world works as Yu-Cen's Poem Manuscript, Lyric of White Lotus Blossom and Lyric of a Lonely Phoenix.
