On Mourning for Death and Detachment in LU Ji’s Poetry

  • After LU Ji got to Luoyang, he explicitly put forward his view“poetry originating from emotion and grandeur”. His poetic view underwent the change from“diction prior to emotion” to“emotion prior to diction”. And he practiced the expression of feelings in his poetry, especially that of pathos. Such pathos in his poetry has two main aspects: mourning for the passing of time and death of life. While expressing his strong pathos, LU Ji consciously“directed his feelings with reason”. He diverted himself from strong feelings with the profound theory. And this endowed such pathos with certain detachment.
