he Evolution of Ancient Chinese Resurrection Novels
Abstract
The resurrection novels of Wei and Jin Dynasties focused on the recording of resurrection events to prove the existence of ghosts and gods. However, in South and North Dynasties, such novels began to disseminate Buddhism. In Tang Dynasty, the resurrection novels deepened the propaganda into the comeuppance and reincarnation. They inherited the content in Song Dynasty. But in Ming and Qing Dynasties, this kind of novels went beyond the dissemination of Buddhism. The “resurrection” became the structure of novels. Generally, such novels have expanded the space and time of narration, formed the circling plot and developed the doctrine of valuing life and pursuing holiness.
