Lessons from LUN Xun’s Legendary Novels of Tang Dynasty: A Textual Research of A History of Chinese Novels

  • In A History of Chinese Novels, LU Xun’s understanding of Tang novels had undergone novels of the legendary style, combination of legendary-style ones and tales of marvels, and tales of marvels of Tang Dynasty, which shows his different understanding of traditional academic thoughts, Western literary theories, categories of historical records and the intention for constructing system of novel history. The former two are not significant in categorization of styles, while the latter one is, which it is in an attempt to canonize the Western literary theories and remove the traditional academic thoughts. And it has some defects of using material to fill in the frame and slaving theories to document, and it is not rooted in the Tang novels.
